You cannot insure what you do not own or have an insurable interest in whether it be a vehicle, a home, a boat, a recreational vehicle or an aircraft.
If you are involved in an auto accident, and you contact your Insurance Broker to get a claim started, your Insurance Broker will ask for proof of ownership. This is outlined in the Auto Consumers Bill of Rights.
When you purchase a car from an authorized dealer or privately, you will receive the ownership of the vehicle from the seller. This ownership must be put into your name for you to legally own the vehicle. This can be done at a Service Ontario location.
The bottom line – if you try to make a claim with a vehicle that you do not own, your insurance claim could be denied.
You buy insurance to prepare for the unexpected and, simply because, auto insurance is mandatory in Ontario. When you need that insurance the most, ensure you have your vehicle properly registered so that your insurance coverage will be valid.
