Commercial Insurance Questions, Answered
How much does commercial insurance cost in Ontario?
There is no flat rate. Premiums are driven by your industry and its risk, your annual revenue and payroll, the liability limit you carry (commonly $2 million or $5 million), your claims history, and the coverages you add such as property, fleet, or cyber. A home-based consultant and a roofing contractor pay very different premiums for the same limit. The fastest way to a real number is a quick quote, and we shop all the major markets to find it.
What types of commercial insurance does an Ontario business need?
Most businesses start with commercial general liability (CGL), then add what their operations expose: commercial property for buildings, contents, and equipment, fleet or commercial auto for vehicles, professional liability (E&O) for advice and services, cyber for data and payment systems, and directors and officers for incorporated boards. Contract-driven work often also needs surety bonding. A broker's job is matching that list to your actual operations, not selling the whole shelf.
What is commercial liability insurance in Ontario?
Commercial liability usually means a commercial general liability (CGL) policy. It responds when your business is legally responsible for injuring a third party or damaging their property: a customer slip and fall, damage caused by your work, or claims arising from your products. It does not cover professional mistakes, which is what professional liability (errors and omissions) is for. Many Ontario contracts require proof of CGL before you can start work.
